We visit Blaine!

Today was a beautiful day in Bellingham! Temperatures reached the upper 40’s and it was a nice, sunny day. We decided yesterday to go early to the Squalicum Park. We were there a few weeks ago and found it to be a beautiful park, full of sky-touching trees and wonderful paths. We went on a spur-of-the-moment, so we wanted to go better prepared today.

I set up the alarm to get up no later than 8:30, we tend to sleep in on the weekends, otherwise. I got up, prepared breakfast, packed a lunch, with snacks and plenty of water, everything a diabetic would need. We dressed Harry in his “Boss” shirt so he would not be too cold and headed out.

Imagine our surprise when arriving at the park to find many parts closed. They were having a foot and biking race, so most of the park was cordoned, marking the trail.

It was a beautiful day, so we did not want to waste it. We had heard about Blaine, and we decided to explore that area of the state. It was a nice drive up, towards the border. We got off the highway about a foot from the crossing into Canada (ok, maybe it was half a mile or so...) and went ahead to the park.

The entrance to which my GPS directed us was a small parking lot where maybe 10 or so cars could park. It was a great spot since we were able to spot a Sasquatch upon arrival. Of course, I took pictures to send to my son, who insists that Washington is one of the biggest areas for sightings.

We continued onto the trail and found the park to be a very nice place, with very old, tall trees. The ground was wet and muddy in spots, but we came prepared with our boots. The air we breathed was loaded with oxygen and the walk on the trail, although uphill was pleasant.

The only drawback was that the only benches we found were very wet, for which we were not prepared, so we were not able to have our lunch in the park.

Harry was showing signs of exhaustion, so we packed him in the bag and walked back to the car.

From there, we headed to downtown Blaine, only a short distance away. We stopped at Drayton Harbor, by the Semiahmoo Bay. We were able to see the Peace Arch, near the border crossing, from our spot. We had lunch at a seaside picnic table and headed into downtown.

It was a nice drive and we stopped at the Railway Café. This was a genuinely lovely place. We ordered an upside-down coffee, the closest thing I have had to a Cuban cafecito, or café con leche, in all the areas we have visited. The place was very nice and the service impeccable. I highly recommend it.

Overall, it was a wonderful day, after all!
